Being a fan already of Richard Linklater since the beginning, it was an awesome surprise when I found out that I was going to be working on “Bernie”! I had no idea what the film was about at the time, but knowing his work, I knew that this show was going to be all about the hidden visual effects. And boy was I right.
Most of my shots were easy things like sign replacements and rig paint outs. Pretty typical stuff for these types of movies. But then it also had it’s share of challenges when it came to doing an HUGE set extension on the hospital at the ribbon cutting ceremony. We threw every trick we had at it to make it a seamless transition, including a lot of Roto grease as I like to call it.
In the end, hopefully this is news to you that there was actually a good bit of visual effects work done on this movie. Because then that means we did our job! And what a fun job it was. It’s always nice to take a break from the CG 3D cartoons every now and then and just get your hands dirty with some good old plate keying and rotoscoping.
