The second of three shorts starring Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner, “Fur of Flying” revisits Chuck Jones’ nostalgic cartoons in a new era of animation. Reel FX was tapped by Warner Bros. Animation to reinvent the cartoon’s legacy while still maintaining its authenticity. The short had to capture the spirit of the originals with the subtleties of humor, timing, and heart loved by Looney Tunes fans across the globe. To achieve this, we created innovative rigging and animation techniques and custom tools that would give the shorts a 2D feel, despite being created in a 3D stereoscopic pipeline.
The 2nd short in the trilogy, “Fur of Flying,” premiered on September 24th in front of Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole.
This short was like our “Empire Strikes Back.” The second in the trilogy, a tad darker than the first (the final act of this short had a color pallette described as “blood red”), and my personal favorite. I think it’s safe to say that we were finally getting to know these characters with this second short, both in animation and lighting. And that opened the door for us to have a lot of fun. Especially with the stereo!
“Fur of Flying” just had so many action packed and dynamic scenes that we could really push the stereo to it’s maximum. Not what you want always in 3D. But when you have a big cartoon rocket zipping around the screen chasing your characters, then that’s a green light to really give your audience their money’s worth. The paid extra for a 3D ticket, didn’t they?!
Anyways, I really loved this short and I hope you did too! Especially if you have kids.
